Tips for Your First Off-Road Adventure

Tips for Your First Off-Road Adventure

Like any new task, you might feel a bit anxious about your first time driving off-road. Rather than letting your worries keep you from an amazing adventure, prepare with our tips for off-road beginners.

Choosing your trail

First things first, where will you drive? Our list of great camping and 4x4 tracks in NSW is the perfect place to start. When you choose a destination, make sure you check the level of the trail you’ll be driving. Most maps and trail sites will categorise the difficulty with colours, grades or other keys. A typical scale might be:

  • Green = Easy
  • Blue = Intermediate
  • Black = Experienced
  • Red = Extreme

Start slow

Speed is not the main aim with off-roading. Sure, it can be fun; but it could also send you into a recovery situation fast. To start with, just take it easy on the trails. Get used to the power of your car and the different obstacles, and over time you’ll be able to add speed to the journey, as well.

Kit up your 4WD

Off-roading is easy when your 4x4 is customised for the drive. There are heaps of different 4x4 accessories to choose from but for beginners we recommend at least these four:

Carry extra equipment

Your car isn’t the only one taking this trip. You have to pack all the essentials for you to have a safe and enjoyable drive, too. You should bring:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Car recovery gear
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight
  • Blankets

And anything else you think you may need in the unlikely event you’d have to camp out for a night or two; or the chance you’ll enjoy it so much you choose to stay.
